Happy New Year

At this time of a New Beginning that brings with it new resolutions to live better lives and quit bad habits, I felt it important to address the underlying issues of addiction - whether to food, exercise, shopping, work, relationships, social media/internet, drugs or whatever we turn to externally for comfort or to make us feel better .

The need for felling better is often brought on by the blame and shame culture in which we all live (compounded by social media)- and our own inner negative self-talk which can be equally destructive when we beat ourselves up for not being good enough,, failing, making mistakes.etc.- I am to blame for this going on in my life or- even worse and easier - become the victim and blame someone else or Society or the Government etc and harbour grievances - All derivatives of the monster- GUILT. It is my fault - or BLAME and SHAME

CURE FOR GUILT It was a few days before Christmas in London in 1988 after I decided to return home to restart my own life that I heard the man I had left behind in New York had been found dead. My grief for such a permanent end to what had often been a troubled if not turbulent 13 year relationship with a much older married man who never got his divorce was compounded by dreadful feelings of guilt. Like it was my fault and If only….. I had done something different…. Thankfully, I was told then and there on that phone call that guilt is the greatest arrogance against God- That if I think I am responsible/in control of events in other peoples lives or can “make” anyone else “be” or “do” anything (as though they had no personal choice in the matter) I am greatly mistaken in assuming there is no power greater than mine at work in the universe. I came to learn that although “I am powerless over people, places and things” The greatest power I do have is over myself – my own life choices from moment to moment and that I am indeed a very powerful being through surrender to the will of my higher power. This much needed lesson in Humility was hugely empowering after a childhood of being scapegoated and blamed for the experiences of others , of being an unknowing “wrongdoer” in others’ eyes- which led to a lifetime of people-pleasing, "rescuing" and lack of self esteem – never inwardly knowing I was good enough despite my very many worldly academic and career achievements and accomplishments as well as physical beauty and the illusion of confidence – of having it all. I am so happy to share how this all changed at age 42 after the double whammy of my bereavement and redundancy after which I entered a transformational 12 step spiritual program and had counselling. Like a butterfly emerging from its previous form I was able to fly to new heights of achievement and, more importantly, actual enjoyment of all the pleasures of life once I crossed the bridge back into normal living in which I can truly have access to true abundance. Daily practice of Humility and the “Maintenance Steps” 10, 11and 12 – self assessment, meditation and prayer and the passing on to others of the program and wisdom I received are fundamental to my existence today including survival of cancer in 2020. Through these experiences which I can share with you, I had a personal appreciation of the meaning of the Biblical Beatitude – “The meek shall inherit the earth” and the Buddhist saying that “when the earth claims your limbs then shall you truly dance”. Learning to “Let Go and Let God” produced truly miraculous results, physically and psychologically.
