“The Glorious Revolution”

Our constitutional monarchy was instituted by Parliament's invitation to William of Orange in 1688 to ascend the British throne as Head of State after it was James II Catholicism that sparked the Glorious Revolution after the restoration of the monarchy in 1660 by King Charles II after the parliamentary Interregnum following the execution of Charles 1 in 1649.

The Bill of Rights was an historic statute that emerged from the “Glorious Revolution” of 1688-89, which culminated in the exile of King James II and the accession to the throne of William of Orange and Mary. Its intentions were: to depose James II for misgovernment; to determine the succession to the Throne; to curb future arbitrary behaviour of the monarch; and to guarantee parliament’s powers vis a vis the Crown, thereby establishing a constitutional monarchy.

The powers and limitations of that apolitical constitutional monarch were clearly delineated.- and continue to this day in the ceremonial roles and duties such as the opening of Parliament with a Speech outlining the programme of HM’sGovernment of the day and all Bills of Parliament needing Royal Assent before becoming Law as Acts of Parliament.

Seamless Hereditary Succession

The many benefits of this system over a politically elected President for short terms of Office has been amply demonstrated by all the tributes to the admirable 70 year Life of Service and Devotion to Duty of HM Queen Elizabeth II who met with 15 Prime Ministers and was a true Defender of the Faith and a fount of wisdom and stability for the nation.

Our glorious Queen has died – Long Live the King Charles III
